Mark Patinkin: A day on the job at Quonset brings a life-saving moment

It was Skip Buxton’s turn to oversee the arrival of the day’s big car ship into Quonset Point, so he woke at his Burrillville home at 3:30 a.m.

Buxton, 53, is one of two pier masters at the port at Davisville. He began there last April after 24 years in the Rhode Island State Police. Part of the job is making sure things follow Homeland Security rules, so it was a good fit.
