Marine traffic finds way in frigid Narragansett Bay

Old dinner-table stories of horse-drawn sleigh rides across a frozen Narragansett Bay don’t seem as improbable with Rhode Island enduring one of the coldest Februaries on record.

Yet despite the frigid winter, Narragansett Bay remains navigable and largely free of the harbor-choking marine ice that has trapped vessels and slowed commerce in Massachusetts ports.

The U.S. Coast Guard and local maritime businesses intend to keep it that way.
