Iris Leader Transits New Panama Canal

The Iris Leader is NYK’s first Ro/Ro (roll-on/roll-off) vessel to transit the new Panama Canal locks, enabling it to call on East Coast ports in the United States.  The ship is due in at the Port of Davisville in mid-July.   After more than nine years of construction the new locks opened on June 26.  They are expected to increase short sea opportunities for many moderately sized ports, such as Quonset’s Port of Davisville.

The Iris Leader is approximately 34 meters (111.5 feet) wide and almost two meters wider than the old Panama Canal locks.   The new lock chambers are 55 meters (180 feet) wide by 427 meters (1,400 feet) long and 18.3 meters (60 feet) deep.   Pictures of it's transit can be seen below.   To a view a video of the Iris Leader's transit, click here.
