Greencore USA, a convenience food manufacturer, is coming to Quonset Business Park and will construct a 107,000 square foot facility, the Quonset Development Corporation and Governor Lincoln D. Chafee announced today.

The new facility will house more than 390 employees and there is potential for a 40,000 square foot expansion, "positioning Greencore to employ more than 600 people at Quonset at full build out," a release stated.

Greencore signed a 50-year lease and the Quonset Development Corporation's board of directors is expected to approve it, paving the way for a planned May 1 groundbreaking.

“We are pleased to be coming to Quonset Business Park and the State of Rhode Island,” said Liam McClennon, CEO at Greencore USA. “In searching for the right location, we wanted to find a place where we could build quickly, have easy access to the major cities on the East Coast, and be in a place where we could grow in the future. Quonset met all those criteria perfectly – it is a world-class facility.”

Greencore produces convenience food in both the United States and United Kingdom. They make soups, prepared meals, sauces, pickles, cakes, deserts and Yorkshire puddings.

Under the terms of the lease agreement, Greencore will build on a 15-acre parcel that is part of Quonset's "Site-Readiness" program, which entails pre-approval of permits and engineering work to expedite projects.

QDC said the success of the program is due in part to the cooperation of the state Department of Environmental Management and the Coastal Resources Management Council.

The lease also includes provisions that would give the company incentive-based discounts for certain job creation and payroll quotas. In exchange for meeting those terms, the company will get a 25-percent rent discount in exchange for the 50-year commitment.

“This is a good day for Rhode Island, and another indication of how investing in our state assets can help create more jobs and propel our economy in the right direction,” Governor Chafee said. “I commend Greencore for bringing a growing company here, and we look forward to showing the world how our resources and workforce can help a company achieve great success.”
